The Whitsunday Islands are a collection of islands found off the coast of Queensland in Australia. It is believed that the name of the islands was a misnomer caused by Captain James Cook of the British navy. Captain Cook named the area ‘Whitsunday Passage’, but, due to a time-keeping mistake, the area should’ve actually been named ‘Whitmonday’. Misnomer or not, though, one thing is certain: the Whitsundays possess an undeniable beauty.
Home to the Great Barrier Reef, the islands are considered as some of Australia’s greatest tourist destinations, attracting 700,000 visitors between 2008 and 2009 alone. With a sub-tropical climate and lush scenery, the Whitsunday group of islands is one of Australia’s premier diving locations, with the area’s Scuba Centre as an icon in the industry of diving tourism in the country.
Vast arrays of amazing diving spots abound in the Whitsunday Islands. If you want to experience diving into underwater valleys and caves, then Manta Ray Bay at Hook Islands in the Whitsundays is an ideal activity for you. Regarded as one of the country’s top diving and snorkeling spots, the area is also abundant with marine life, including manta rays and napoleonfish.
Listed as a World Heritage Site and considered as one of the Seven Wonders of the World, no trip to the Whitsundays is complete without exploring the
Great Barrier Reef Whitsundays waters. As the largest reef system in the world, the Great Barrier Reef hosts thousands of forms of marine life, from corals and seaweed to turtles, dolphins, and dugongs. If you live for diving, the Whitsundays is the place to be.
Another noteworthy
dive Whitsundays spot is Hardy Reef. Also located on the Great Barrier Reef just off Airlie Beach, the reef’s waters are known to host a diverse array of marine life, from snapper and trout all the way to the 2-meter long giant grouper. Besides being an excellent diving spot, the reef is also an ideal site for snorkeling.
Other popular
diving Whitsundays spots include Bait Reef and Barry’s Lagoon. The sites are protected, making them perfect spots for snorkelers and novice divers alike. Found off Hamilton Island, the areas are abundant with marine organisms such as turtles, soft corals, and manta rays.
